Our founder and Managing Director, Monica Bradley, talks about how she succeeded in business and the essential qualities that can lead to success.

I’m often asked by various people why I started MB Associates and how I made it a successful company.

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting a local school and talking to female students about how they could achieve their career goals. I spoke about why I started my own business.

I’m often asked how I made my business work and what made me go out on my own in the first place. It was hard work, but I tried to keep things simple. My goal was always to run my own business. I didn’t want to work for anyone else. So I didn’t overthink it or ponder too long on whether it would work.

I developed the skills and knowledge I needed to get started and got on with it. I know that sounds simple, but if you’re genuinely passionate about achieving something, you’ll put more effort into it and reap the rewards in the end.

Starting from scratch

You also need exceptional drive and determination. There’s a drive within me to succeed. I’ve worked very hard over the years. I didn’t come from a privileged background, and I didn’t have any significant connections. I started from nowhere and built my business and reputation from the ground up.

When I started in financial services, I learned as much as I could about the industry. I spoke to industry peers, and I looked up to older people with more experience. I analysed what worked for them. I learned as much as I could from others. I still believe you always continue learning. Even now, when I have a meeting with a new contact, I think if I have learned just one new thing, then it’s been a worthwhile meeting.

Observing what others are doing

If you want to succeed, I recommend seeing who is doing well in your chosen field and observing what they’re doing. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most of the time, people are happy to be asked for help or advice.

As a mortgage and protection adviser, I deal with many generations of families and am still passionate about what I do. I’m determined to ensure that all our clients get the best advice. Exceptional service is a priority for my business.

I aim to hire like-minded, self-motivated, energetic and ambitious people. My team genuinely care about the work they do.

Making the most of every day

Sadly, as a financial protection adviser, I’ve seen too many people suffering from serious or terminal illnesses. It’s not uncommon for me to receive calls from clients and hear that their partner or spouse is seriously ill. The first question they’ll ask me is: ‘Is my life insurance or critical illness cover up to date?’ It’s terribly sad when this happens, and it’s also a stark reminder to me that life is short. So I try to make the most of every day. And for me, that means achieving my goals in business and making the best of my life.
